JazzBaltica 2010

»With Friends – 20 years JazzBaltica«

JazzBaltica jubilates: 20 years of Jazz in Salzau, 20 years of Jazz with friends, 20 years of inspiring concerts. The anniversary will be celebrated from June 30th to July 4th in Kiel, Husum and Salzau. The JazzBaltica Jubilee Ensemble will sing the birthday song - this summer lead by bassist Martin Wind from Flensburg. Special guests for example Maria Schneider, Don Friedman, Wolfgang Haffner and Nils Landgren, well known from the JazzBaltica chronicles, will bring Jazzstar feeling to Schleswig-Holstein.

Artists in Residence Nils Landgren and Michael Wollny

As Artists in Residence Nils Landgren and Michael Wollny will be in the centre of JazzBaltica 2010. They represent the old and the new festival – its eventful past and its promising future. Landgren experienced his German premiere in Salzau, played with Jazz-Stars like Maceo Parker and the Brecker-Brothers und has been an integral part of the JazzBaltica-family for almost two decades. In Europe and Germany Wollny has been titled the most important Jazz piano-talent of the last years. By now he has taken root in the German Jazz-scene. The Artists in Residence’s duo concert, Landgren’s »Funk Night« and Wollny’s »Wunderkammer« are just some of the highlights of this year’s festival.

Great Singing Talents

It is a JazzBaltica-tradition to invite great singing talents from all over the world to Schleswig-Holstein. The new voice of Brazil, Céu, and the American Jazz-discovery Kate McGarry can newly be added to the group of amazingly talented singers like DeeDee Bridgewater, Paolo Conte, Al Jarreau and Curtis Stigers, who were JazzBaltica’s guests in the past years. In a very individual way the singers approach present-day Jazz. Cæcilie Norby and Nils Landgren can be called dinosaurs of Scandinavian Jazz vocals, which they share with the audience in Salzau in the familiar manner.

Piano stars from Poland

The JazzBaltica piano music has a distinctly Polish orientation this summer. This fact might be due to the most famous Polish piano representative Frédéric Chopin. Polish Jazz pianists influence the lively Jazz scene in Poland more than any other instrumentalists. Vladyslav Sendecki, Piotr Wylezoł and Leszek Mozdzer will be guests in Salzau this year. Each one of them can be counted the best pianists in the world.

Familiar Faces

As every year the visitors can look forward to familiar faces in new formations: Don Friedman, Dave Holland, Charles Lloyd, Jason Moran, the Anke Helfrich Trio, Edmar Castaneda and Tomasz Stanko will be taking part in JazzBaltica. The Portico Quartet, the Mathias Eick Quintet and Mark Turner FLY are experiencing Northern German Jazz culture at its best for the first time.

Open Air

Open Air the stage belongs to the Young German Jazz from Schleswig-Holstein. On stage the Johanneum Bigband under Hartmut Jung, High5 from Flensburg and Thomas Grossmann’s »Double the bass« have the chance to demonstrate their talent. All together their music is rich with new ideas and will surprise even long standing visitors of JazzBaltica.

SessionConcerts

At night it is time for the SessionConcerts in Salzau. The Lisbeth Quartet and News from the North will start off on Friday night, while the Studnitzky Trio EGIS will rock Saturday night. The Mathias Landaeus Trio, featuring the legend of bassists Palle Danielsson, is Nils Landgren’s Swedish discovery and – being the »final notes« of JazzBaltica 2010 – a true present to the jubilee’s audience.
